AHSAA BASEBALL PLAYOFFS: Athens Bible swept by Decatur Heritage

DECATUR — Athens Bible School took a four-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but couldn’t hold off a two-out rally from Decatur Heritage Tuesday in a 11-10 extra-innings loss.
Leading 10-6, the Trojans needed just three more outs to take the first game of the Class 1A semifinal series against Decatur Heritage. ABS quickly got two of those outs and looked like they would emerge victorious from a back-and-forth opening game.

Down to their last out, Decatur Heritage pounded out back-to-back doubles and a single to score four runs and tie the game, sending it into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Jeff Hunter’s fly ball to center field allowed Grayson Wakefield to score from second base and complete an amazing rally for the home team.
Athens Bible’ Jacob Shackleford was 4-for-5 with with an RBI while Dyson Barksdale pounded out three hits and an RBI. Kenneth Adams, Mitchell Etheredge, Matthew Usery and Clayton Hodges each had two hits for ABS. Etheredge had a team-high three RBIs.
Wakefield led Decatur Heritage with a triple and a home run and three RBIs while Carter Sample had a game-high four RBIs.
DHA won the second game 9-2 to advance to the 1A championship.
