Athens High School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Class, Boys Soccer Team and Event Planning and Management Class all spread love and kindness to local seniors this Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14.

In the past few weeks, several AVID students came together to help create 200 heartfelt Valentine’s Day cards, while Event Planning and Management students handcrafted cozy blankets for distribution to nearby senior centers and nursing homes.

On Thursday, Feb. 13, members of the Athens High School and Athens Middle School Boys Soccer Team walked the halls of Athens Health and Rehabilitation, LLC, and Senior Rehab and Recovery Center to personally deliver the cards and carnations to residents.

Adding to the spirit of the lovely holiday occasion, AVID and Event Planning students visited Limestone Manor to share their cards, carnations and blankets on Friday.

“This special cross-class collaboration between AVID, Event Planning and Soccer enables our students to gain valuable experience in service and community,”Lindsey Ramsden, Athens High School AVID Teacher, said. “We are excited to visit the residents to spread love and cheer. We hope to brighten their day and make them feel appreciated and connected to the younger generation.”

AVID is a college and career readiness program that offers students the opportunity to build skills in organization, studying, writing, collaboration and critical thinking to prepare students for success in college, career, and beyond.

Athens City Schools first implemented AVID back in 2015 — it is now co-curricular at Athens Intermediate School and offered as a class at Athens Middle School and Athens High School. Students at AMS and AHS are selected to be a part of AVID after an application and interview process. The Athens High School AVID Class participates in weekly activities related to team and relationship-building.

Through this meaningful and heartwarming initiative, students at both Athens High School and Athens Middle School were able to not only demonstrate their dedication to academic and career success, but also their commitment to making a positive impact on their community.
