If you’re looking for a way to help clean up your community, Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful has a job for you.
The nonprofit organization’s Trash Attack initiative is set for 8 a.m. Saturday, March 9. Most of the details are in place, but KALB is seeking more volunteers.
Individuals, families, businesses, groups and organizations are encouraged to sign up. The event is being sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Authority, United Pest & Turf Control, KALB and Keep Alabama Beautiful in partnership with the Alabama Department of Transportation.
“Let’s let our community know that we have had enough and we believe in a clean community,” said Lynne Hart, executive coordinator for KALB. “The best way to teach our youth or anyone about litter is to let them help clean it up — it makes it real.”
While the Elk River has been the focus of KALB’s previous annual cleanup events, Hart decided to expand the focus this year. To that end, there are four places where volunteers can meet:
• The boat launch on Hatchery Road off Alabama 99 for West Limestone cleanup;
• Big Spring Memorial Park (the duck pond) for Athens and East Limestone cleanup;
• Jones Drug parking lot for Ardmore cleanup; and
• The Aerospace building at Calhoun Community College for cleanup of Swan Creek Wildlife Management Area.
Trash bags, buckets, net water bags, vests, litter grabbers and gloves will be provided. Volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for the weather and also wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
Volunteers are asked to bring gloves if you have them and sunscreen and insect repellant.
TVA, United Pest & Turf Control and KALB will provide lunch for all volunteers. All volunteer names will be entered into prize drawings, but volunteers must be present to win.
