West Limestone scores late to defeat Brewer

West Limestone looked dead in the water heading into the bottom of the sixth inning against Brewer Thursday afternoon, trailing 7-1 heading into their final six outs of the game.

But a Brewer error with two outs gave the Wildcats life and they took advantage of it, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to come back for an 8-7 victory.

Brewer looked to have the game sewn up, leading 7-1 with two outs and two runners on base, but a ground ball by Gage McKelvey was misplayed by the Brewer shortstop, which allowed a run to score and the game to continue.

Daltin Simmons drove in the next run with a single before Bayle Owens stole home to make it 7-4. Braden Tuten followed with an RBI double before three consecutive walks and a hit by pitch drove home three more runs to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game.

Tuten pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning to close the game and get the pitching victory. Tuten pitched the final 3 1/3 innings of the game, allowing just one unearned run on two hits.

Tuten also led the Wildcats with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Bayle Owens and McCormick also had doubles while Branson Owens and Clayten Pugh also had RBIs for the Wildcats, who improved to 9-8 on the season.

Athens 9, Smith County (Tenn.) 5

Athens got the Wilson Central Tournament in Lebanon, Tennessee off to a good start with a win over Smith County (Tenn.) Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles started off hot with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the second to take an early 6-1 lead and held Smith County at bay the remainder of the contest.

Kade McHalffey had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs, while Bailey Odell had two hits and three RBIs of his own. Daniel Cundiff had three hits and drove in a run, and Jacob McNairy and Ethan Tease also had two hits each, with McNairy also hitting a double. Jack Garvin had one RBI for the Golden Eagles (11-5) as well.

Lars Stanford was the winning pitcher, allowing just one earned run on five hits with 11 strikeouts in six innings of work.

St. John Paul II 19, Elkmont 12

St. John Paul II scored 14 runs in the final three innings to take a come from behind victory over Elkmont Thursday evening.

The Red Devils led 8-5 after four innings, but St. John Paul II scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Elkmont answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Falcons put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.

Elkmont did have an impressive 10 stolen bases in the game, with Preston Robinson swiping four, and Jaevan Jackson and Hunter Pitman both stealing three each.

Pitman and Jackson also had three hits and two RBIs each, while Robinson had two hits and Brian Rios had a hit and two RBIs. Braden Miller and Coby Scroggins each had an RBI for Elkmont.

College Softball

Calhoun splits doubleheader at Southern Union

Calhoun Community College split a doubleheader at Southern Union Thursday, falling 7-0 in the first game before recovering to win the second game 8-4.

Breeann Biddle had a double for Calhoun, while Elkmont’s Dakota McCurley, Demariei Corley, Baleigh Robertson and Morgan George also had hits.

In the nightcap, Jessica Shaw led the way with a home run and five RBIs in the victory. McCurley was 3-4 while Taylor Jones was 2-3. Biddle and Shayla Carroll also had doubles for the Warhawks while Sydney Uhlman was the winning pitcher.

Calhoun continues its season Tuesday when the Warhawks host Bevill State.
