An Athens man was killed Saturday and another man was seriously injured in a separate wreck Sunday.

Cornelius Lamont Anderson, 34, of 2042 Luke St. was killed Saturday when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding left the road and struck a sign at 4:33 p.m., according to Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce.

Bruce said Anderson “lost control of the ATV” as he was riding on West Strain Road.

“He left the roadway and struck a metal sign,” he said. “The impact threw Anderson into a tree.”

Anderson was taken by ambulance to Athens-Limestone Hospital and pronounced dead at 5:31 p.m., Bruce said.

Accident reports show Anderson was not wearing a helmet.

According to the Web site ATVsafety.gov, the total reported deaths in Alabama between 1982 and 2006 from ATV accidents was 174, although data collection for 2003-2006 remains incomplete.
