Betty Joyce Ledford Roberts

Betty Joyce Ledford Roberts, 89, of Athens, died Friday, March 11, 2016, at Huntsville Hospital.

Born Aug. 1, 1926, in Mooresville, Tennessee, Mrs. Roberts was the wife of the late George Harold Roberts and daughter of the late Bryan Herman Ledford and Ruth King Ledford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Bryan Eugene Ledford, Tyson David Ledford, Linda King Ledford and Carolyn Ledford Fortson. 

Survivors include her sisters: Amy L. Ledford of Athens and Alice L. Foughner of Marietta, Georgia; sister-in-law, Imogene Ledford of Lewisburg, Tennessee; and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mrs. Roberts excelled at academics, basketball and was named Football Queen of Marshall County (Tennessee) High School. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Athens State University, where she met her husband of 56 years, George Roberts. Mrs. Roberts also earned a Master in Education from Peabody-Vanderbilt University. Betty taught school for 33 years at Clements High School and held many leadership roles in Limestone County, which made an indelible mark on the education of many young people in the area. 

Mrs. Roberts, along with her husband George Roberts, were lifelong supporters of the Alabama Crimson Tide football program, traveling to many exciting games around the country. Mrs. Roberts was one of the founding members of the Limestone County Friends of the Library as well as the Glen Augur Garden Club, founded in 1960. She was an active member and supporter of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, at the First Presbyterian Church of Athens. Visitation will be 5-8:30 p.m. Friday at McConnell Funeral Home.
