Thank you, Athens

Dear Editor:

I was traveling alone across four states last weekend to visit my daughter at Alabama. My truck broke down in Athens, and I was surrounded by angel after angel from your community.

Officers Randy Vickers and Jay Flint from the Athens Police Department helped me and waited with me (during their lunch) until a tow truck arrived. Tommy and Dexter from Reliable Towing Service were kind and gracious and went out of their way to help me.

Ashley at Hertz rented me her last car. McClary Tire Company is the best! They took such great care and were so very, very kind.

You were all angels put in my path. Words cannot express how thankful I am for each and every one of you.

In this day and time, someone traveling alone (especially a woman) is easily taken advantage of. These people went above and beyond anything I expected. They represent true Southern hospitality and the greatest integrity.

I am forever grateful for them all. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sincerely,

Opposition to county building inspections

 Dear Editor:

Chairman Yarbrough proposed the need for building inspections. I propose he wants the power they would give him and the county. Inspections are at best another way to take away our rights and generate a new tax stream for the county. Worse is corruption and back scratching that will go with them.

The real issue, is the fact that it is a foot in the door for Yarbrough’s ultimate goal of county wide zoning — county wide power to tell you what kind of dog you can own, shed you can build, color you can paint your house, how often you have to cut your grass, etc.

Before you say these things are absurd, look at Madison county. I had a friend who spent over $10,000 to defend herself from prosecution because her supposed vicious dog was seen carrying the neighbor’s dead cat. Not seen killing the cat, just carrying it. Madison county’s zoning said her beagle was vicious. He is a beagle, and he is not vicious. We don’t want Limestone County to go in this direction, do we?

They say people are being harmed because homebuyers think houses have been inspected for structural integrity. This is simply not true. Most people look at a house and take repairs, etc., into account when buying. The idea that we need government to protect us is the same line of reasoning that got us Obamacare. They say most people don’t know how to take care of themselves and that they should have health insurance. Is it sounding familiar yet? It should be their choice. Why is it any different for a house or your health?

Inspections will bring red tape, paper work and regulations, which will be the end to many small handymen and DIYers. For example, say I wanted to hire my retired carpenter neighbor to build a house. I would get a deal and he could pick up extra dollars. With inspections, this couldn’t be done.

For those afraid without inspections, may I suggest there are plenty of cities you can move to. Please let me have my freedom of life, liberty and property. Think about the men and women fighting for our freedom. Please call and tell your county commissioner to oppose inspections. Don’t let our Limestone County way of life disappear forever.

Sincerely,

Carl Nelson
