State officials react to Trump’s second inauguration

Donald J. Trump was officially sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, Jan. 20, returning to the White House with a promise to “completely and totally reverse” the actions of Joe Biden, who drove him from the office four years ago.

“It is a beautiful day for the United States of America as we swear in President Trump and Vice President (JD) Vance,” Governor Kay Ivey stated in a release from the Governor’s Office Monday. “Beginning today, President Trump will get to work for our people, as he unleashes American energy and secures our Border. Alabama stands ready to support his mission to foster a stronger than ever America. Congratulations to President Trump and Vice President Vance. I am confident our best days are ahead.”

Frigid cold weather disrupted the usual traditional pageantry of the day. Due to the freezing temperature Trump’s swearing-in on the U.S. Capitol steps was moved inside to the Capitol Rotunda — the first time that has happened in 40 years — and the inaugural parade was replaced by an event at Capital One Arena.

Trump had to overcome more than the bitter cold to return to the Oval Office — such as impeachments, criminal indictments and a pair of assassination attempts to successfully win another term in the White House.

After the swearing-in process was completed, Trump signed dozens of executive orders to clamp down on border crossings, increase fossil fuel development and end diversity and inclusion programs across the federal government.

The orders from the Republican president will begin the process of unraveling the Democratic agenda set forth under former President Biden, whose term ended at noon on Monday, just moments before Trump took the oath of office.

“Today is a new day in America with President Donald Trump’s historic inauguration,” U.S. Senator Katie Britt stated in a release following the inauguration.  “Every American will get to experience this landmark day, because President Trump and Vice President Vance will build a stronger, safer, more prosperous, and more secure nation for every American. From day one, promises made will become promises kept. My Senate Republicans and I stand ready to help deliver real results for hardworking families in every corner of America. Our nation’s best days are ahead, and today marks not just the beginning of a presidential term, but our country turning a corner.”

In his inaugural address Trump declared that the government he received faces a “crisis of trust,”  and that under his administration, “our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced.”

Trump also claimed “a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal,” promising to “give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and indeed their freedom.”

Dale Strong, Alabama’s 5th Congressional District Representative, attended the presidential inauguration in Washington D.C. and released the following statement.

“Today is the day we have been waiting for. Donald J. Trump overcame every attempt by the establishment to stop him. His election came as an overwhelming mandate by the American people — to secure the borders, restore our economy, unleash American energy, and re-establish the United States as a respected world leader. He did not have to fight through this adversity, but he did. Today marks a new beginning. I am honored to serve the people alongside President Donald J. Trump, and I look forward to Making America Great Again. Our time is now.”
