Athens BOE names interim middle school principal

The Athens City Board of Education met briefly Thursday morning to approve a list of personnel actions, including the appointment of Dr. Rick Carter as interim principal at Athens Middle School.

Carter, who currently serves as executive director of innovative programs at the Athens City Schools central office, will take on the additional responsibility of leading Athens Middle School for the 2018-2019 school year.

Superintendent of Athens City Schools Dr. Trey Holladay said he chose to appoint an interim instead of posting the vacant position for stability reasons.

“We had so much transition with moving kids and schools around, we wanted to put someone in there who was familiar with our system, our kids and procedures,” Holladay said.

Carter will continue to direct the virtual program, charter applications and the Athens Renaissance School while serving as AMS’s principal.

Holladay said the board will be prepared to hire a permanent AMS principal for the 2019-2020 school year.

The board also approved renovations to the old Athens High School campus, which will house sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students starting this fall. Most of the renovations are cosmetic, according to Holladay, and include interior paint, new carpet, a new sensory room and the installation of a security door in the sixth-grade center. The center will be housed in a separate wing of the school with its own secure entrance.

Because the system only received one bid for the work, Holladay said they will save money by parceling out the different jobs to individual contractors. The single bid came in at $190,000.
