Commission makes way for road expansions

The Limestone County Commission met briefly Monday to approve the relocation of utilities that run along East Limestone County Road, making way for lane additions. The board also approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Limestone County Drug Court and the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts.
Four utility projects were unanimously approved by the board. The first two projects include reimbursable agreements with the Athens Gas Department and the Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority that allow for the relocation of utilities on East Limestone County Road. The county plans to add lanes on the stretch of road from McLemore Circle to East Limestone High School. The estimated cost for the projects is $14,111 and $64,622, respectively. Two non-reimbursable agreements were also approved, including one with AT&T and the other with Charter Communications. These agreements provide for the relocation of utility facilities so that East Limestone Road can be widened from Elkins Road to East Limestone High School.

The development of a small three-lot subdivision on Poplar Point Road was also unanimously approved as was a 30-mph speed limit on Lewis Road.
In other business, the board approved the selling of six county dump trucks from districts 1-4 to JM Wood Auction Company Inc. in Montgomery. Proceeds from the sale will allow the county to purchase six new trucks.
The Limestone County Extension Office was given the go-ahead to purchase 10 Cisco 8841 VoIP phones and one Cisco catalyst ethernet switch at a cost of $5,042.
An MOU between the AOC and Limestone County Drug Court was approved by the board, allowing the transfer of $22,500 in funds from the AOC to the county’s drug court. The money comes from the Alabama Legislature 2018 budget and is to be used to enhance drug courts, mental health courts and veterans treatment courts. The Limestone County Drug Court will use the funds to hire personnel to run the drug court docket, assist in case management, provide assessments and treatment services to participants, purchase supplies and equipment and allow drug court staff to attend training and continuing education courses.
