An event at the Athens-Limestone Public Library will have a decidedly different feel to it this year.

The theme for the annual Storybook Ball is “Build a Better World.” To that end, the event will take on a multicultural theme in hopes of educating children about life outside the United States.

Anna Clem, the chair of this year’s event, said the theme was the same at the library’s summer reading program. But whereas the reading program focused more on “building,” the Storybook Ball will focus more on an international feel.

“I thought it would be neat, especially with the way things are in the world right now,” she said. “I thought it would be something good for kids to be exposed to.”

Attractions will include a photo booth and props from different countries. There will also be an assortment of international foods.

Joe Carlucci, the owner of Famous Joe’s Pizza in Athens, will also perform. He is the world record holder for the largest pizza base made in one minute, having recently set the record on Gordon Ramsey’s show, “The F Word.”

Live music will be provided by the Tangerine Tambourine Band, which plays music geared toward young children. Attendees are urged to dress as a storybook character, in patriotic attire or in clothing representing another country.

Tickets for the Storybook Ball are now on sale and are $20 for adults and $15 for children ages three-12. Children under three are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the library at 603 S. Jefferson St., Athens, or online at www.alcplfoundation.org. Proceeds from the event benefit the library and a planned outdoor classroom and green space.

“If you haven’t seen the library, it’s a great way to come and visit,” Clem said. “The kids have a good time and you can help your local library.”
