A helicopter hovers above the scene of a one-vehicle rollover crash Thursday near the intersection of U.S. 31 and Laughmiller Road.

A single-car wreck Thursday evening sent a man and child to Huntsville Hospital after the 2005 Chevrolet Express van they were in rolled over on U.S. 31 South near Laughmiller Road near Tanner.

Athens Police Department and Athens Fire and Rescue responded to the crash just after 5 p.m. where they found the driver, Evilio Membreno-Villacorta, 41, of Courtland, thrown from the vehicle and a 12-year-old boy seriously injured, said Athens police Capt. Trevor Harris.

Villacorta went to the hospital by helicopter and the child went by ambulance. Villacorta was listed Friday afternoon in good condition but there was no report on the boy.

Harris said according to preliminary investigations, it appeared the van was headed south on U.S. 31 when it drove onto the right shoulder of the road and veered back across the southbound lane before rolling several times and coming to rest in the median.

Harris said officers found no indication of what caused the van to wreck.
