Students prepare to graduate from the inaugural Athens Renaissance School Thursday at McCandless Hall at Athens State University. This year's class had 26 seniors, and 22 participated in commencement exercises.

Twenty-two of 26 seniors who attend the Athens Renaissance School received their diplomas Thursday as part of the school’s first commencement ceremony.

The ceremony was held at McCandless Hall on the campus of Athens State University.

A press release from Athens City Schools described the seniors as “blended,” meaning they are enrolled in a mix of virtual education and traditional learning. One student traveled from Moody in St. Clair County to attend the ceremony.

Courtney Franklin, a graduating senior, gave a short motivational address. Ryan Nix from Athens High School performed the traditional graduation march music, “Pomp and Circumstance.”
“They are beyond excited,” said ARS Principal Dr. Joanna May. “It has been a true joy to watch their excitement as they finish their courses and move toward making their graduation dreams a reality.”
