Two-day book sale

Houston Memorial Library and Museum, at 101 N. Houston St. in Athens is celebrating Earth Day by recycling books to new owners during a two day book sale — 2-6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. Sale includes 10 paperbacks for $1. Each hardback is also $1. Genres available are fiction, nonfiction, self-help, young adult, western, mystery, cookbooks and DIY. Scholarship applications deadline

Friday is the deadline to submit applications for the Limestone NAACP 2016-2017 scholarships for graduating high school seniors. The scholarships are “an effort to aid in secondary education for Limestone County and Athens City Schools students.” Applications available from high school counselors or any Limestone NAACP member. Walk for Autism

The Walk for Autism-Athens is set for 8:30 a.m. (late registration) until noon Saturday, at Athens Stadium, next to the high school. The walk begins at 9:30. The family event will include activities for kids, light refreshments and a resource fair. Walk leader for the event is Todd Tomerlin. Advance registration ends April 20. Free container planting workshop

Limestone County Master Gardeners Association is offering a free workshop on container planting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lowe’s in Athens.

Peace and Love picnic

The Elkmont High School Class of 69’s Summer of Peace and Love Picnic begins with a fellowship and luncheon at noon Saturday at the Elkmont Rural Village picnic pavilion. Members of the classes of 1968 and 1970 are also invited and children are welcome. Attendees can also bring desserts, chips, baked beans, slaw or other condiments. County Relay for Life registration

Registration is underway for the Limestone County for a Cure Relay for Life team’s second annual Cornhole for a Cure Tournament on Saturday, April 22, to benefit American Cancer Society. Fee is $40 per team through April 20, and $50 thereafter and the day of the event at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Bicentennial Cemetery Stroll

The Bicentennial Cemetery Stroll is set for 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Athens City Cemetery, located between Hobbs and Washington streets in Athens. The annual event will celebrate diverse cultural heritage with more than 40 period-attired personalities, who represent the area’s notables and notorious. The event, provided by Sons of Confederate Veterans, Athens-Limestone Tourism and Order of the Confederate Rose, is free to the public. Gardening questions answered

Limestone County Master Gardeners Association is available every Tuesday and the first Saturday of every month at Athens-Limestone Public Library from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to answer gardening questions.

Used book sale

Friends of the Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10:15 a.m. – 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 603 S. Jefferson St. More information: 256-232-1233.

Free Alzheimer’s seminar

The free seminar, “When Alzheimer’s Touches a Family” will begin at noon Tuesday at the Athens-Limestone Senior Center, 912 W. Pryor St., Athens. Author Rebecca Jarrad, a registered nurse and Alzheimer’s caregiver specialist is the presenter. One of her three books addresses the various types of abuses experienced by Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. The event is sponsored by the Pryor Street Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Refugee/immigration crisis presentation

Athens State University’s Coleman Center for Religious Studies and Ethics will present the topic “The Ethical Dimensions of the Syrian Refugee Crisis and other Immigration Issues In America” at noon Tuesday in the second floor chapel of Founders Hall. The challenges of helping displaced people on the run from war and terror will be explored and along with the extent of American involvement. The presentation will accommodate commentary, questions and answers. The public is invited.

Fish fry fundraiser

Tickets are on sale for the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives’ annual fish fry fundraiser to be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1917 U.S. 72 West, Athens. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Advance tickets available from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays at the museum.

Karaoke fundraiser

American Veterans Mims-Russell Post 21, at 22769 Black Road in Athens, has karaoke night from 8 p.m.-midnight every Friday. There is a $5 cover charge at the door.
