CENTER POINT, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a Birmingham-area man strangled his wife before then trying to kill the victim’s teenage son.
News outlets report Willie Bell Jr. is charged with capital murder in 36-year-old Janet Ranae Shaw’s death.
Deputies say Bell strangled Shaw during an argument at their Center Point apartment Monday. Deputies say Shaw’s 15-year-old son discovered her body after returning home from school.
Authorities say Bell then attacked the teen and tried to strangle him. The boy managed to escape and run for help.
Authorities say Bell admitted to detectives that he strangled Shaw and tried strangling her son. He also faces an attempted murder charge.
WBRC-TV reports that Bell was charged with trying to strangle Shaw and the child last October.
