A Tennessee Valley college instructor won a Grammy Sunday for his work on the last album by country music duo Joey + Rory.
Mark Evitts, the fiddle and mandolin instructor at Martin Methodist College, played on “Hymns,” which was awarded in the category of Best Roots and Gospel Album. Evitts also serves as director of Richland Creek, Martin Methodist College’s bluegrass ensemble.
“Mark is a fantastic colleague and a consummate musician,” said Dr. Timothy Powell, program coordinator for the college’s music department. “Under his direction, our students receive a world-class education from one of the most gifted fiddle players and arrangers in Nashville. We are really lucky to have Mark on our faculty.”
For the Joey + Rory’s final album, Rory Feek reached out to Evitts to write a string arrangement and play violins and violas for the classic hymn “How Great Thou Art.” The album, released Feb. 12, 2016, was certified gold in December after selling more than 500,000 copies.
Feek’s wife and musical partner, Joey Feek, died of cancer on March 4, 2016, less than a month after the album’s release.
“It truly is an honor to be a part of a Grammy winning recording,” Evitts said. “I used to dream about this day when I was a student, and I know how it feels to work really hard for something. My students at MMC are all so talented and hardworking, and they inspire me every day.”
