Ardmore tax assistance

The RSVP group are filing taxes free for seniors and lower income tax bracket people beginning today and going through April 12 at the Ardmore Public Library, 25347 Main St., Ardmore, Tennessee. Call the library at 931-427-4883 for an appointment.

THURSDAY

Athens tax assistance

Free income tax return preparation, by RSVP volunteers in Athens, will begin Thursday for low income people, people with disabilities and the elderly. The location is First Baptist Church Youth Activity Center at the corner of Pryor and Clinton streets. The schedule is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Walk-ins only. No appointments. The service will also be available 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays from March 2 through April 13.

‘Arise and Build’

“Arise and Build,” a musical play about the history of Trinity School is in performance Friday through Sunday, Feb. 3-5. The play is directed and co-written by Frank Travis and based on Charlotte Fulton’s book, “Holding the Fort.” Performances are 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3; 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Friendship Church, 16479 Lucas Ferry Road. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased in Athens at The Sweetest Things Tea Room, 216 W. Market St., and Square Clock Coffee, 121 S. Marion St.; in Tanner from Head 2 Toe Salon, 19785 Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road; and in Huntsville from Verge Beauty Salon, 6140 University Drive, Suite F. Poke Sallet Silver tickets

Poke Sallet Follies Silver Celebration tickets go on sale for $35 each at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Athens-Limestone County Senior Center on West Pryor Street. The sale continues through the week from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Monday evenings from 6-8 p.m. Show dates are 7 p.m. March 2, 3 and 4. Includes meal and 1 1/2-2 hours of entertainment. African empires in biblical record

Athens State University will launch a two-part lecture series free to the public on the history of “African Empires in the Biblical Record” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sanders Student Center ballroom. The series covers contributions of little known empires to world civilization from a religious and historical point of view. The Athens High School choir will perform.

Master Gardener classes

The Master Gardeners winter session of classes begins Thursday, Feb 9. Classes will meet 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Thursday for 13 weeks at the Tennessee Valley Research Station on Mooresville Road. Classes cover plant growth, insect and disease control, vegetables, fruits, flowers, trees, shrubs, soil, and environmental issues. Black history program

Trinity Class of 1966 will hold it’s 31st annual black history program at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Village View United Methodist Church at the corner of Plato Jones and Hine streets. The program will observe the national theme “The Crisis In Black Education” and is dedicated in memory to classmate and former Athens City Councilman Jimmy W. Gill and all other deceased classmates.
