Master Gardener classes
The Master Gardeners winter session of classes begins Thursday, Feb 9. Classes will meet 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Thursday for 13 weeks at the Tennessee Valley Research Station on Mooresville Road. Classes cover plant growth, insect and disease control, vegetables, fruits, flowers, trees, shrubs, soil, and environmental issues. MLK essay contest
The 2017 Athens-Limestone Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Essay Contest is underway. Essays must be submitted no later than Jan. 9. The contest is open to Athens and Limestone County students in the age groups 6-12, 13-15 and 16-18. Each age category includes a specific essay question. Pop tab collection
The Limestone County Farmer’s Federation is collecting aluminum pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham. Anyone may drop off their tabs from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, at the ALFA Insurance Office, 524 U.S. 72 West (across from Big Lots). More information: 256-233-0938.

• Fifth District ADC. The 5th District ADC is holding its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Madison County Democratic Headquarters, 2835 Memorial Parkway NW, Huntsville. More information: Eddie Sherrod 256-508-1782.
• Friendship Quilt Guild. Athens Friendship Quilt Guild will meet Monday, Jan. 9, at the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall on the corner of Jefferson and Washington streets. Fellowship at 9:30 a.m., meeting at 10. The program is how to make a quilt carrier.
• Master Gardeners. The Limestone County Master Gardeners Association will meet Monday, Jan. 9, in the Extension Office on Market Street in Athens. Social time/refreshments 12:30 p.m., speaker at 1 and meeting at 1:30. The public is invited. More information: 256-614-3530.
• Cancer survivors support. The cancer survivors support group will meet for dinner at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Lawlers Barbecue on U.S. 72 in Athens. Survivors and caregivers are invited.
• Toastmasters Club. Athens Toastmasters Club will meet from 5:45-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 124 Cloverleaf Drive (American Legion Post 49). The club meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month to learn and enhance public speaking and leadership skills. The public is invited.
• Garden Club. The Athens Garden Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Tanner Baptist Church Family Life Center. Member Paula Gember will present the program, “Making Garden Flags.” Members are reminded to bring supplies to make their own garden flags during the meeting.
