One Athens

When the residents of the Athens Health and Rehabilitation expressed their desire to attend an Athens High School pep rally or football game, activities director Jessica Chambers knew that, logistically, it was impossible. But, she had an idea — maybe the pep rally could come to them.
“I called the school and said, ‘I have almost 50 residents who want to come to a pep rally, what do I do? Is there any possible way Athens can come to them,’” Chambers asked.
The school told her they would find a way to make it happen, and Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 17, members of the Athens High School dance team, cheerleaders and marching band led a pep rally at Athens Health and Rehab. Residents waved their shakers, clapped along to the fight song and enjoyed popcorn and soft drinks.
Making the day even more special, the residents and staff held elections leading up to the event for their very own homecoming court. The homecoming king and queen were announced and crowned at the pep rally.
The 2023 Athens Health and Rehabilitation Homecoming King and Queen are Leonard Nolen and Lenette Calvin.
Members of the Homecoming Court are Betty Miller, Michael Miller, Beulah Long, Edward Jackson, Donald Charbonnett and Marilyn Taylor.
“The Athens community is fantastic. They are wonderful. Without the community, I couldn’t do my job. My job is to love and care for them, but I need to reach out to the community to help us,” Chambers said. “Today was very special.”
