Limestone County baseball players honored by coaches

Three Limestone County baseball players received top honors from area coaches, as they were selected Player and Pitcher of the Year in the county for the 2019 high school baseball season.

The Pitcher of the Year award was awarded to two players, as nothing much could separate Elkmont’s Brett Parker and Athens Bible’s Matthew Usery.

Parker is a case study in why win-loss records shouldn’t matter much in deciding pitching awards, as he had just a 5-5 record despite a sparkling 1.75 earned run average in 64 innings pitched. Parker also struck out 100 batters and walked only 19 for the Red Devils.

Usery had a 7-1 pitching record with a 1.73 ERA in 48 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 81 batters and walked 28 in helping the Trojans reach the second round of the Class 1A playoffs.

Ardmore first baseman and pitcher Hogan Whitt was named Player of the Year in Limestone County. The junior had a .407 batting average with four home runs, seven doubles and two triples. He had 24 RBIs and stole 14 bases for the Tigers as well. He also was one of Ardmore’s top pitchers, finishing the season with a 4-1 record and a 3.53 ERA in 37 2/3 innings pitched.
