Athens blows out Muscle Shoals in area contest

Jacob McNairy did it all for Athens in an 11-1 win over Muscle Shoals Thursday evening. The University of Alabama signee allowed just four hits and one run on the mound while also collecting two hits and driving in three runs at the plate as the Golden Eagles opened up Class 6A, Area 16 baseball play with a five-inning victory.

McNairy had an RBI double in the first inning, and a run scoring single in the fifth. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the first inning, three more in the second and two in the third before ending the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Ethan Tease had two hits, including an RBI triple, while Kade McHalffey and Bryson Kirk both had two RBIs for Athens.

The Golden Eagles improved to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in area play. They will play at Muscle Shoals in a doubleheader today, with the first game beginning at 1 p.m.

Brooks 6-10, East Limestone 3-11

East Limestone split a doubleheader with Class 5A, Area 16 opponent Brooks, dropping the first game 6-3 before taking a thrilling 11-10 victory in the nightcap

Brooks scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an insurmountable lead in the first game. The Lions would expand the lead to 6-0 in the fourth before East Limestone would make it interesting with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Carlton Schmeider led the Indians with three hits and an RBI, while Cameron Johnson had two hits and an RBI.

The Indians nearly led a huge lead slip away in the second game, but scored a run in the top of the seventh to hang on. East scored seven runs in the top of the second inning to take a 9-2 lead, but Brooks battled back and tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

But Zachary Pyles drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the seventh, and Reis Browning made the lead stand up by striking out the side in the bottom of the inning.

Pyles was East Limestone’s offensive leader with three hits and two RBIs, while Browning and Payton Jackson also had two hits with an RBI. Brison Wooten had two hits and an RBI for the Indians as well.

East is now 5-6 overall and 1-2 in area play.

East Lawrence 12-8, Elkmont 7-11

Elkmont split a doubleheader with East Lawrence Thursday in a couple of high-scoring games.

Elkmont held a 4-3 lead in the first game, but East Lawrence scored three in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull away.

Hunter Pitman had two RBIs for Elkmont, while Clay Hunt and Benji Hanback also had RBIs. Jaevan Jackson also had two hits for the Red Devils.

Seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning was enough for Elkmont to hang on to an 11-8 victory in the nightcap. The Red Devils led 4-2 before the offensive explosion in the bottom of the sixth. Hanback had a two-run single in the frame, while the rest of the runs scored on either wild pitches or errors.

East Lawrence came back with six runs in the top of the seventh, but Hunter Pitman struck out the final batter of the game to end the threat.

Cameryn Peden also had two RBIs for the Red Devils, while Jim Dawson had a hit and an RBI.

Brian Rios was the winning pitcher, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven in six innings.
