GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) — Police say a man serving a life sentence who escaped a work release center has been recaptured in coastal Alabama.

Gulf Shores police say a call about a suspicious person Wednesday night resulted in the arrest of 38-year-old Kevin R. Campbell.

Police said in a statement that Campbell was carrying stolen property, hit an officer and tried fleeing the scene but was taken into custody.

Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton says Campbell escaped from the Elba Community Work Center on Aug. 3. Elba is roughly 145 miles northeast of Gulf Shores.

Horton says Campbell is a habitual offender who was serving a life sentence on a Baldwin County robbery charge. Horton says Campbell will also be charged with escape, multiple charges of theft, assault and obstruction of justice.
