William A. ‘Bill’ Legg

The funeral for William A. “Bill” Legg, 85, of Athens will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spry Funeral Home with Kevin Ward and Randy Weeks officiating.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Legg died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Huntsville Hospital.

He was born March 5, 1925, in Athens.

He attended Athens High School and he was an All-State and All-American football player.

He later attended and played football at Vanderbilt University and Athens State College. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He was a P-38 fighter pilot in the European Theater, flying 29 successful missions. He was a 50-year member of the International Professional Rodeo Association, a longtime youth football coach and a supporter of Athens and Limestone County football programs.

He retired from the Alabama Department of Agriculture.

He was a member of Salem Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Legg; sons, Clint Legg and wife Chasity Campbell Legg of Athens; Tony Berryhill and wife Wanda of Guin; granddaughters, Whitney Berryhill and Ashley Berryhill, both of Guin, and Lillian Bae Legg of Athens; and one great-grandson, Jackson Trimm of Guin; countless friends and adopted sons and cowboys.

Pallbearers include Jon Russell, Will Russell, Cade Baker, Keith Clem, Jeff Pugh, Bill Kelley, Rusty Bates and Jay Vassar.

Honorary pallbearers will be E.J. Adcock, Dennis Clem, Ronnie Tribble, Roger Ryan, Bobby Dean and Zac Greene.
