TO THE POLLS: Limestone rocks the vote

Voters across the country made their way to the polls Tuesday, and voters in Limestone County were no exception.

Some, like Morgan Seymour, were going for the first time. Morgan said her husband, Chris Seymour, encouraged her to finally give voting a try after years of never really being interested. She said it was a “kinda cool” experience she’s up to having again.

“It’s very important,” Chris said. He believes not enough people voted when President Barack Obama was in office and that it caused the country to be in the shape it’s in now.

Other voters had different reasons for their treks to the polls. For John Calzwell, it’s a way to make sure the government gets back to looking after veterans, including himself.

“It helps my community,” Calzwell said. “Plus, it helps to support other citizens.”

Voter Ron Oakley said he’s been visiting the voting booth for almost 50 years, except for maybe one election. His grandson, Walker Smith, joined him Tuesday. At 4 years old, he’s too young to cast a vote, but he had no problem accepting a “#Voted” sticker from poll volunteers.

He’s also old enough to influence his grandfather’s vote.

“I work half a day and then pick him up so we can hang out together in the afternoons,” Oakley said. “… I would like for him to grow up in the America I grew up in.”

Some voters needed help getting to the polls. Patsy Appleton of the Limestone County Council on Aging had voted earlier in the day, but when she realized the senior citizens she was taking to Walmart needed a ride to vote, too, she made sure they got there.

“One of the ladies said everybody should vote, and I said, ‘I agree wholeheartedly,'” Appleton said. “We ain’t got a whole lot of rights left, it seems, but we’ve got the right to vote.”

Willa Mae Baker was one of those on the ride. While Appleton didn’t say it was Baker she was referring to, Baker took it upon herself to let The News Courier know how she felt about voting.

“That’s our right,” she said. “That’s the only real right we’ve got, the only one we don’t have to pay for.”
