Wiley ‘Snookum’ Meredith

The funeral for Wiley “Snookum” Meredith, 79, of Athens will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McConnell Memorial Funeral Home with James Carter and K.C. Poole officiating. Burial will be in Bottoms Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Meredith died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at Athens Convalescent Center.

He was born June 19, 1928, in Limestone County to Mabery Carl Meredith and Willie Mae Thompson. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church. He was a Korean War Army veteran. He retired from Thycol in Huntsville as a construction worker. He loved to play the guitar.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Meredith; his parents; and one brother, John Meredith.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Browning Meredith of Athens; two sisters, Joyce Downs and husband Arlin of Madison, and Mary Melson of Athens; two brothers, Carl Meredith of Montgomery, Ind., and James Meredith and wife June of Athens; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one stepdaughter, Linda Callahan of Athens; and four stepsons, Calvin Browning and wife JoAnn of Covington, Ky., Harold Browning and wife Carolyn of Athens, Larry Browning and wife Cathy of Harvest and Arnold Browning and wife Carol of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Browning, Arnold Browning, Jeff Browning, Christian Jacobs, Darek Downs and Tracy Tyler.
