Miranda Lambert breaks ACM Awards record, reaps the rewards

Miranda Lambert turned heartbreak into victory — and money — April 2 when she shattered an Academy of Country Music Awards record for most wins in the Female Vocalist of the Year category.

Lambert has now won the prize eight times since 2009. Last year, she tied the record with seven-time winner Reba McEntire and has now surpassed the redheaded legend in the category.

During the show, which aired live from Las Vegas, Lambert also won the Album of the Year prize for her double set, The Weight of These Wings. To top it off, she received a standing ovation after performing her new single, “Tin Man,” in which she laments a failed relationship with such lyrics as, “If you ever felt one breakin’ / You’d never want a heart.”

The lyrics are almost certainly a reference to her 2015 divorce from Blake Shelton, and onstage at the ACM Awards she told her fans, “Thank you for letting me use my heartbreak and sharing it with me.”

Although she beat out another powerhouse singer, Carrie Underwood, in the Female Vocalist category, Lambert hugged Underwood before taking the stage, where she graciously declared, “Carrie can sing me under the table. We’ve agreed on that.”

“I’m just glad to see females kicking ass these days,” she added. “I’m so proud to be part of that. Cheers to all of us girls out there dreaming.”

Lambert’s ACM victories also translated to cash. Following the show, sales of “Tin Man” increased by 12,215 percent, according to Forbes, and sales of The Weight of These Wings shot up by nearly 1,000 percent.
