South Alabama investigators refocus efforts on 36-year-old cold case

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — It’s been 36 years since Sandra Williams was found dead on Sept. 11, 1980.

For decades, police have been unable to make an arrest, but the case was reopened last year when Williams’ sister brought it to the attention of state investigators.

Judy Barfield tells WKRG-TV that it’s been a long time and her sister needs to rest. Williams’ mother, Virginia West, says she feels the same as she did when it happened. The hurt, she says, never ends.

The 19-year-old’s body was found on a dead-end street in Toulminville, miles from her apartment. She was raped and stabbed.

Detectives have been re-testing DNA using technology that wasn’t available when the crime happened. They’re also hoping to re-interview witnesses but they’re having challenges finding former residents of the Summer Tree Apartments.
