Judge sends mothers to jail

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Mobile County Juvenile Court Judge Edmond Naman has sent three mothers to jail after court hearings for more than 30 parents facing criminal charges for truant and tardy students.

Two of the three were jailed Thursday on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a child.

The third, who has a history of substance abuse, was ordered to jail for violating probation when she failed a drug test that the judge ordered.

Naman says he believes jail is not only for robbers, rapists and murderers but also “for people who break court orders and neglect their children.”

The daylong court proceedings were held for parents of children who are chronically truant from Mobile County Public Schools.

The hearings are part of Naman’s and the school system’s effort to take a harder stance on truancy.
