Theater group to present ‘Anne of Green Gables’

Footlights Community Theater, an Athens-based troupe, will stage a production of “Anne of Green Gables” this week, according to a press release.

Performance dates are 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15-17. Matinee performances are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. Performances will be staged at the First United Methodist Church of Athens’ Beasley Center.

About the work

The classic literary work by L.M. Montgomery was adapted for this production by direct Kristi Kargic.

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert are siblings who live on their ancestral farm, Green Gables, in the quiet town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Matthew needs a boy to help him work the farm. Eleven-year-old Anne Shirley is sent from the orphanage by mistake instead of a boy. Anne is a highly imaginative, talkative, eager to please and, at times, quite dramatic young lady.

Marilla says Anne must return to the orphanage, but after much consideration, along with Matthew’s strong liking to Anne, she decides to let her stay. Anne must navigate through this new chapter of her life in Avonlea at church, school and with neighbors such as Rachel Lynde who at first highly disapproves of Matthew and Marilla taking in an orphan.
