New girlfriend shoots ex-girlfriend, then threatens to shoot self

A Huntsville woman shot her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend in the shoulder at a Limestone County home Monday night, then hid in a closet and held a gun to her head while talking on a cell phone before a sheriff’s deputy was able to talk her out, an official said.

Billie Jane Burns, 42, of 2850 Wynterhall Road, Apt. 1606, has been charged with felony assault in connection with the incident and remains in the Limestone County Jail, said Chief Investigator Capt. Stanley McNatt.

The shooting victim’s name was not released.

The incident occurred about 8:05 p.m., when Limestone County authorities were called to a reported shooting at 13063 Virginia Court in Copperfield Subdivision, McNatt said.

Deputy Sean Doyle arrived first to find an Athens woman —the ex-girlfriend — sitting in a chair in the living room and holding a towel over a gunshot wound through her right shoulder.

The victim was treated at Huntsville Hospital and released, McNatt said.

Burns did not say what prompted her to shoot the ex-girlfriend or why she threatened to take her own life, he said.

Investigators were planning to interview Burns this morning.
