Athenian players to present ‘Hamlet’
The Athenian Players will present a production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” next month in downtown Decatur.
The play will run six days in November — 8-10 and 15-17 — in the performing arts building of the Alabama Center for the Arts at 133 Second Ave. NE, across from the Princess Theatre, according to a press release.
Performances will begin at 7:30 each night and run approximately 2 1/2 hours.
Tickets are on sale now for $15 for regular admission and $10 for seniors and students.
Directed by Dr. Hugh Long, the story of deceit and revenge is set in the art deco- and steampunk-influenced kingdom of Elsinore, Denmark. Prince Hamlet seeks revenge on his uncle, Claudius, for both the murder of his father, King Hamlet, and Claudius’s ensuing succession to the throne and marriage to Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother.
Written in the late 16th century, “Hamlet” is a poignant tale of regicide (king killing), family feuds, broken hearts and vengeful ghosts. It is considered one of the most powerful tragedies in the English language and is widely regarded as both the best of Shakespeare’s work and the perfect play.
The cast includes:

• Chris Clark as Laertes;
