LCSO: Elkmont woman used fake name to sell stolen stuff
An Elkmont woman accused of selling stolen items on a smartphone app was arrested Monday after Limestone County investigators learned her true identity, an official said.
On Feb. 10, deputies recovered stolen property at a home in the 23000 block of Norman Lane in Elkmont. Limestone County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Stephen Young said the Athens Police Department had provided information that a woman named Charity Sumers, who lived at that address, had been selling stolen items using the Letgo app.
Investigators determined Charity Sumers was an alias being used by 36-year-old Stephany Lynn Morris. Young said the names were linked through a profile photo.
Investigators returned to the Norman Lane residence Monday and spoke to an older woman who confirmed Morris was her daughter. When investigators asked to speak to Morris, she gave investigators a false name and date of birth matching the name she gave.
“Further investigation revealed that the female was in fact Stephany Morris,” Young said. “She was asked three more times if she was sure she was the other woman, and she insisted that she was.”
Investigators then placed Morris under arrest and subsequently charged her with using a false identity to obstruct justice. Bond was set at $2,500.
Young said she confessed to using a fake name because she had outstanding warrants. He said she also admitted to posting the items using the Charity Sumers alias to conceal her identity.
The investigation continues, Young said, and additional charges are possible.
