Police say man set multiple fires, including chief’s vehicle
FAIRHOPE (AP) — A southwest Alabama man has been charged with setting a string of fires, including trying to burn a police chief’s vehicle and a house.
Investigators told WPMI-TV that 33-year-old Phillip Mack of Mobile is an “opportunistic fire setter.”
Investigators say that on Thursday he purposely set fire to a home in Daphne, a vehicle at the freestanding emergency room in Daphne, and three vehicles in Fairhope. The Fairhope Police department confirms one of the vehicles was a city vehicle assigned to Police Chief Stephanie Hollinghead.
Mack was arrested in Mobile on Friday. He’s jailed in Baldwin County with bail set at $1.5 million. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer to speak for him.
Investigators say Mack’s motive is a mystery right now.
“Other than just to cause damage, that is motive in itself,” said Lt. Andre Reid with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. “Some much deeper thing, it’s hard to say at this point because the victims were all so different. They didn’t know him. They had never met this man. It’s like he was kind of like an opportunistic fire setter. It’s hard to say exactly what was driving him,”
Detectives say the car set on fire at the Malbis emergency room was a random target unrelated to anything at the medical facility.
Reid said Mack was trying to set the gas tanks of vehicles on fire.
Mack may face additional charges.
