Softball Roundup: Athens’ offense explodes in victory
Athens’ bats were scorching hot Tuesday, as the Golden Eagles scored 15 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 23-0 victory over Columbia in just three innings.
Athens had 21 hits in the game, with Mary Greg Anderson, Anna Carder, Jordyn Johnson and Lilli Cain each collecting three hits.
Johnson and Emma Ogden each had four RBIs, while Carden and Cain drove in three runs apiece. Gracie Green had two hits and two RBIs, and Morgan Stiles had two hits for the Golden Eagles.
Deann Motquin and Brenin Ezell combined to pitch a no-hitter. Motquin pitched the first two innings, and Ezell pitched the third. The combined for five strikeouts and no walks.
East Limestone 10, Madison County 2
East Limestone pounded out 15 hits and 10 runs in a big victory over Madison County Tuesday.
The Indians’ big inning was the third, in which they scored four runs to take an early 5-0 lead. East also scored three runs in the top of the seventh to put the game on ice.
Rylie Grisham, Kaci Sharp and Cassidy Sowell all had home runs for East, while Zoey Allen had a triple and Mallory Jo Mitchell hit two doubles. Sowell and Sharp also had doubles in addition to their home runs. Madison Watkins also had three hits for East in the victory.
Olivia Crouch pitched the first five innings to get the win, while Grisham worked the final two scoreless innings in the circle.
Elkmont 11, Brooks 1
Elkmont scored seven runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 10-run victory over Brooks Tuesday.
The Red Devils scored three runs in the top of the first, with RBI doubles by Abby Gooch and Brilee Miller being the big hits. Elkmont then added four runs in the top of the second. Paige Robinson hit a two-run double in the inning, while Hannah Usery had an RBI double and Sydney Pressnell drove in a run with a single.
Robinson also added a two-run single in the fifth inning, finishing the game with four RBIs.
Presnell led the Red Devils with three hits, while Miller, Haven Kirby and Montana Crowe each had two hits.
Usery was the winning pitcher, allowing just one run and striking out six in the complete-game effort.
