Registration open for pre-apprentice lineworker program

Registration for the summer 2018 pre-apprenticeship lineworker program at Calhoun Community College opened March 16, according to a press release.

The three-week program will include 280 contact hours of classroom and field training. During that time, students will learn lineworker fitness, ratios and proportions, electric fundamentals and more.

“This program is another great example of Calhoun’s commitment to connect curriculum, programs and hands-on training to industry demand in our region,” said Houston Blackwood, project manager for industrial training with Calhoun Workforce Solutions.

Those who successfully complete the course will receive a pre-apprentice lineworker certificate. They will also receive first aid/CPR certification, Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10-hour safety training, ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate and a commercial driver’s license.

The cost to participate is $3,750. Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funding is available for those who qualify.

“This program was structured with input from the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association apprentice program, regional and statewide utilities, cooperatives, and electric contractors, along with best practices from other lineworker training programs,” the press release said.

Deadline to register is Friday, March 23. For more information, visit http://calhoun.edu/workforce-development/workforce-solutions or contact Blackwood at 256-306-2664 or houston.blackwood@calhoun.edu.
