The untold stories of ‘Star Wars’: 7 tales that should be shared from franchise’s vast universe
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” stands apart from other theatrical releases in the Star Wars universe.
The film, opening this weekend, is the first Star Wars live-action movie to hit the big screen that isn’t part of a planned trilogy. Its story is self-contained in a two-hour adventure, neither sequel or prequel, but rather a tangent about a mission that’s success is key to plot points in “Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope.”
“Rogue One” is a story that Star Wars fans didn’t even know they wanted until it was in development. And it’s just one of a thousand ideas born of the vast universe that’s grown from George Lucas’ unexpected hit in 1977. With Star Wars, the possibilities really are endless.
Taking the entire Star Wars universe, stories both canon and legend, into consideration, here are seven other Star Wars “stories” we’d like to see get a standalone film:
1. The Lost Lightsaber
During last year’s “Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens,” Rey finds Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber locked away in a chest in the basement of Maz Kanata’s castle. The last time we had seen that particular lightsaber it was clutched in Luke’s severed hand as it fell into the depths of Cloud City. Maz tells us that how she came to be in possession of the weapon is a story for another time. We can only hope so.
2. The Exile
After the death of Padme in “Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith,” her newborn twins are split up, in hopes of protecting them from their father, the newly ordained Darth Vader. Bail Organa takes baby Leia to Alderaan to raise as his own. Obi-Wan Kenobi ferries Luke back to Anakin’s family, the young Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, on Tatooine. What does Kenobi do in the years between delivering infant Luke to that tiny igloo and saving a grown Luke from the Tusken Raiders? Is his exile spent merely watching over young Skywalker or were there other adventures in the Outer Rim? It’s a time worth exploring.
3. Last of the Jedi
When Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, newly revealed as a Sith Lord, initiates Order 66 in “Revenge of the Sith,” the Republic’s clone troopers turn on the Jedi, nearly wiping them out. Undoubtedly, somewhere in the universe, some Jedi, perhaps a group fortunate enough to be together at the time, were able to fend off the betrayal and hide from the Empire. Would they return to the temple to find out what happened? Would Darth Vader hunt them down? They undoubtedly would eventually perish at the Empire’s hand, but a story about their days as some of the last of the Jedi would be compelling.
4. Boba, a Bounty Hunter
Despite less than 10 minutes of screen time over two movies, bounty hunter Boba Fett has gained legendary status among Star Wars fans. In “Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones,” we learned Boba was the unaltered clone of Jango Fett, whose DNA was the template for the clone troopers. His “father” was killed in front of him later in the film. Other than that, we’ve seen nothing about the backstory of the great Fett on film. This story is likely high on Disney’s list of tales to tell.
5. The Crimson Corsair
Much like Boba Fett, Sidon Ithano, also known as the “Crimson Corsair,” “Blood Buccaneer” and “Red Raider,” has gained a cult following despite minimal screen time. Ithano appears in “Force Awakens” briefly as the captain of the ship that offers Finn safe passage away from the First Order. He also is highlighted in a short story in “Star Wars Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens” and had a bonus level devoted to him in the “Force Awakens” LEGO video game. The pirate’s adventures beyond the Outer Rim would make great fodder for a standalone tale.
6. The Kessel Run
Han Solo’s claim that the Millennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs may have been a fanciful boast to convince Obi-Wan and Luke of the ship’s worthiness but it left fans wondering exactly what Han was talking about. The run itself is a precarious hyperspace route favored by smugglers to move spice, at the behest of the Pyke Syndicate, from the spice mines of Kessel. There’s a chance we’ll see the Falcon’s infamous run in the upcoming Han Solo film, but a tale about the freighter captains who frequent it might be worth its own film.
7. The Grand Admiral
Star Wars fans familiar with the expanded universe or currently watching the “Star Wars Rebels” animated series know all about the red-eyed terror Grand Admiral Thrawn. His character, an evil alien genius, is one of the most beloved of the Legends timeline, the part of the expanded universe no longer considered canon. He is the first of the characters to be retconned. Perhaps elements of Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy could be reborn on film.

While Star Wars fans dream about what could be, here are a few things you can’t miss that already exist:
1. “Star Wars Rebels” – The animated series may be one of the best Star Wars things going right now. It follows a small band of some of the first Rebels to fight back against the Empire, including Jedi Kanan and Ezra, a powerful Force wielder.
2. The Aftermath Trilogy – Two of the trio of novels telling the story of events that took place after “Return of the Jedi” have been released – “Aftermath” and “Life Debt.” “Empire’s End” is due to be released in February.
3. Comics – Marvel is tackling the time between “A New Hope” and “The Empire Strikes Back” in a series of comic adventures featuring the classic Star Wars characters. You’ll find new stories about Luke, Han, Leia and Darth Vader.
