Authorities say man’s lift home turned into robbery
An Athens man thought he was getting a ride home until a man brandished a handgun and demanded his money and his pills, records show.
The victim told a Limestone County sheriff’s investigator that Riley Clay Johnson, 17, of 19568 Spence Cave Road, Elkmont, and Nicole Lynn Wagner, 18, of 22711 Pine Road, Athens, had lured him into their vehicle early Wednesday under the guise of giving him a ride home, according to an investigator’s report. Once the man got inside, however, he was driven to an isolated area in northern Elkmont where the vehicle stopped. Johnson drew a gun, held the man at gunpoint and demanded his money and medication, according to the report. The man tossed them $35 and fled the truck, preventing them from getting his medication. He ran into a field and called 911.
Johnson and Wagner were taken into custody later Wednesday morning at Elmwood Apartments in Athens. An investigator examined their cellphones and found evidence of Wagner conspiring with someone else as well as Johnson setting up the robbery, according to the report.
Wagner and Johnson were each arrested on one count of first-degree robbery, jail records show. Although Johnson is a juvenile, he was charged as an adult because first-degree robbery committed with a handgun is a Class A felony with enhancement. Punishment upon conviction is 20 years to life in prison.
The two remained in the Limestone County Jail Wednesday evening with bail set at $40,000 each. Their release had not yet been set.
The investigation continues in order to identify the other suspects involved, according to the report.
