Athens police probe burglaries at car dealerships
The Athens Police Department is seeking information about burglaries at two local car dealerships over the weekend and another stolen car found abandoned at an Athens motel, an official said.
Chief Floyd Johnson said his department received a call Sunday about a broken service bay door window at Champion Chevrolet, located at the intersection of U.S. 72 and Clinton Street. The discovery was made by an employee, who also determined a set of keys to a vehicle had been taken from inside the building.
Also on Sunday, the department received a call about a 2007 Honda Accord being stolen from the dealership. The owner of the vehicle works there, Johnson said.
Late Sunday, Lt. Dusty Meadows was checking the business when he noticed a sport-utility vehicle with the driver’s door open. He also observed lights flashing on a new pickup truck.
While checking the SUV, Meadows located two sets of keys in the SUV. He also discovered the dealership had been entered a second time.
Johnson said a review of surveillance footage revealed three to four black males in the parking lot when Meadows began his check. When they saw the officer, Johnson said, they ran, dropping keys to other vehicles. A search of the area yielded no suspects.
On Monday, Meadows was at McClary Ford when he noticed a broken window in the service bay. Management determined keys to eight vehicles had been taken.
Later that morning, officer Neal Muse found a stolen white SUV at the Days Inn on U.S. 72 in Athens. Police determined the vehicle had been stolen out of Decatur.
“At this time, we believe all of these thefts and burglaries are related,” Johnson said. “The investigation into the cases is continuing.”
Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call the Athens Police Department at 256-233-8700.
