An Athens man was killed this morning in a single-vehicle crash, an official said.

Limestone County Coroner Mike West identified the victim as 55-year-old Marcus Patterson of Athens. State Trooper Chuck Daniel said the crash occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on U.S. 72 near the intersection of Bledsoe Road.

West said Patterson was traveling east in a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse when his vehicle left the road and hit a culvert. He added the vehicle went airborne and rolled several times.

West said Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle.

State troopers are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
