Man’s foot run over by train at Piney
A CSX train ran over the foot of a Piney Chapel Road man early Monday, according to Alabama State Trooper spokesman Curtis Summerville of the Huntsville post.
Doug Baucom, 65, was flown by MedFlight helicopter to Huntsville Hospital after the 9:40 a.m. accident, at the rail crossing on Piney Chapel Road, Summerville said.
A CSX work crew had apparently stopped the train to unload gravel on the track bed and the train began moving while the injured man was standing too close, according to witnesses.
“The train was unloading gravel along the track and Mr. Baucom was assisting, but his help was not solicited,” said Summerville. “The conductor told him to get back, to step back and wait for a backhoe. But then he came back when the conductor turned his back.”
Waiting trains stacked up on sidetracks in both directions while waiting for CSX investigators and troopers to clear the crossing.
A Huntsville Hospital spokeswoman said that Baucom was still being treated in the emergency room at 3:30 p.m. Monday and there was no status report available on his condition.
The Piney Chapel crossing has been the site of six car-train wrecks. At least two of those wrecks have resulted in fatalities, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.
The state is embarking on a $200,000 to $300,000 project using federal aid to install a warning system at the crossing.
