Athens OKs 2018 street paving list

At least 32 streets in Athens will be paved sometime this year or early next year.

Athens City Council members approved the 2018 street paving list during their regular meeting Monday.

Mayor Ronnie Marks pointed out the list is not final and that additional streets could be added or the priority of streets could change depending on need.

Although the city has spent $1 million on street paving each year for the past three years, this year’s list totals about $1.3 million.

The mayor said the overage will work out by pushing a few projects into the next fiscal year. He said the city may not be able to finish all of the streets on the list by then anyway.

He told council members if they have any streets to add, they need to get them to the Public Works department and get them into the work order.

Street Department Manager Dolph Bradford told council members during the meeting the list reflects those streets most in need.

“We try to choose the streets in most need of repair, and we try to share the wealth among all of the (five City Council) districts,” he said. “It’s a working tab we can work off of.”

Both District 3 Councilman Frank Travis and District 5 Councilman Wayne Harper said they needed to add to the list some streets that are in dire need of attention.
