Man flees authorities in chase that crossed state line

CARROLLTON, Ala. (AP) — Mississippi and Alabama authorities say a man led them on a high-speed chase and almost ran over a deputy.

News outlets report 44-year-old James Michael Prestridge was arrested Wednesday night in Pickens County, Alabama, and will be extradited to Lowndes County, Mississippi, on felony fleeing and eluding law enforcement charges.

A news release from Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy pulled Prestridge over and suspected he was under the influence. It says Prestridge fled the traffic stop, pulled over on Highway 182 and fled again, riding the highway into Pickens County at more than 90 mph (145 kph).

The release says Prestridge tried to run over a Lowndes deputy, causing the deputy to open fire.

Both counties took Prestridge into custody. Pickens is investigating whether it will charge Prestridge.
