BESSEMER (AP) — A judge has ruled an Alabama man convicted as a teenager for the 1994 slaying of a fast-food manager may someday be eligible for parole.

Al.com reports Anthony Miles was sentenced to life in prison without parole after a jury convicted him of killing Jill Louise Johnson at a Hueytown KFC restaurant. Johnson was the restaurant’s assistant manager. Miles was a 17-year-old kitchen employee.

Jefferson County Circuit Judge David Carpenter on Thursday gave Miles, who is now 40, a new sentence of life with the possibility of parole. Judges are reconsidering punishments in many cases after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it’s unconstitutional for juveniles to face mandatory sentences of life without parole.

The judge noted Miles’ new sentence is not a recommendation that he should be granted parole.
