LCSO: Man in hospital victimized by Athens couple
A man is in jail and a woman is being sought because authorities say the pair stole from an elderly Athens man while he was in the hospital, an official said.
Limestone County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Stephen Young said a 77-year-old man reported more than $2,500 in cash and property were missing from his home on Grover Drive after a hospital stay. Deputies took the burglary report Sept. 29.
The man told deputies his wife had passed away and the only other person with a key to his home was a former neighbor who checked on him weekly. The former neighbor was identified as 31-year-old Amber Deann Roberson of Brownsferry Street, Athens.
“Investigators found that Roberson had called the hospital on the day the property went missing to check on the victim,” Young said, adding investigators believe she was checking to make sure he was still in the hospital and not home.
Roberson’s boyfriend, 39-year-old Jason Bernard Gilbert, also of Brownsferry Street, Athens, was seen on security footage selling items reported missing from the victim’s home. During interviews with investigators, Gilbert “changed his story several times before confessing,” Young said.
He is charged with first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly. He remains in the Limestone County Jail with bail set at $5,000.
Deputies are still seeking Roberson, who has an active arrest warrant for first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly.
Anyone with information about Roberson’s whereabouts is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 256-232-0111.
