Mysterious preacher topic of next society meeting
The recent cold snap and light snow that prompted the Limestone County Historical Society to cancel its Jan. 16 meeting can’t keep a good story down.
The group has rebooked local author Jacque Reeves for its Feb. 20 meeting. She will share her insights on the Rev. Constantine Blackmon Saunders, otherwise known as the X + Y=Z Preacher.
Dessert and coffee will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the program starts at 7.
During the 1850s, Saunders served at the Mooresville Church. Also known as the “Sleeping Preacher,” Saunders, was said to have had the ability to fall into a trance-like state. During this trance, it was said he could describe events that happened far away and write word-for-word the content of letters yet delivered. He also had the uncanny ability to find long-lost items and prescribe treatments for ailments that supposedly worked.
The extraordinary account of the 19th century preacher was documented first in a biography written by Saunders’ contemporary, the Rev. George W. Mitchell, and later by Huntsville author William P. Drake.
Jackie Leonard, vice president of the local historical society, said Reeves has uncovered some new details about Saunders she plans to share at the meeting. He added that a stained-glass window at First Presbyterian Church is at the center of Reeves’ new discoveries.
Reeves, the owner of Avalon tours and co-founder of Huntsville and Decatur Ghost Walks, will also share her insights about the preacher’s psychic abilities and the religious and social climate in North Alabama at the time.
The meeting is open to the public and will take place at First Presbyterian Church’s Rodger’s Center, 112 S. Jefferson Street in Athens.
