Athens Bible sweeps Hackleburg, advances to quarterfinals

Athens Bible School got off to a good start in its second round series with Hackleburg Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory in the opening game.

The Trojans carried that momentum into the second game, winning 12-5 to advance to the third round of the playoffs.

In the first game, Kenneth Adams and the ABS defense gave up just a single run and Jacob Shackleford had two RBIs to lead the Trojans to victory. Adams struck out seven and gave up four hits in a complete game.

Shackleford drove home Clay Hodges on a hard-hit single in the bottom of the third inning to open the scoring for the Trojans.

In the bottom of the fifth, Shackleford allowed Matthew Usery to score on another hard hit ball up the middle, which the second baseman failed to handle to give ABS a 2-0 lead. After Hackleburg’s Brynn McGuire scored in the top of the sixth inning, Adams retired the side in the final innings to help ABS get a leg up in the series.

Hayden Nix, Mitchell Etheridge and Usery all had hits for ABS in the low-scoring playoff game.
