Jones will present fatal bike wreck to grand jury

A Limestone County grand jury will determine if criminal charges are merited in the bicycle wreck that killed an Athens man Sunday.

Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones confirmed Monday his office will present the case to jurors, though no date has been scheduled. When he took office in 2011, Jones said he would present all fatal wreck cases to a grand jury and let jurors decide if any law was broken.

Evaristo Ocampo, 66, was killed about 8:10 a.m. when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a 2001 Ford driven by Jacob Lewis, 30, of Athens, according to Alabama state troopers.

Ocampo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Limestone County Coroner Mike West said blunt-force trauma was the cause of death.

Lewis was not injured, troopers said.

Trooper Curtis Summerville said Monday troopers are still investigating the accident and had no further information.
