Prep Baseball: West scores late runs to defeat East
West Limestone scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to come back and defeat East Limestone 5-4 Monday night.
East had a 3-1 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but West’s bats came alive in the top of the seventh. Alec Baugher got the scoring started with an RBI double, then Braden Tuten tied the game with a run-scoring single.
Cooper Phillips gave the Wildcats the lead with an RBI single of his own before Thorne Slaton grounded out to drive in the final run.
East Limestone wasn’t finished, as the Indians pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh, but West’s Chayse Carter was able to close the game.
Baugher led the Wildcats with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Phillips also had two hits for West, while Ryan Britt and Carter each hit doubles.
Zach Pyles led East Limestone with a hit and two RBIs. Cameron Johnson, Brady Kassay, Tyler Wagnon and Jacob Burgess also had hits for the Indians.
East Limestone will host Arab in the Class 5A playoffs, beginning 5 p.m. Friday. West Limestone will travel to Wilson to begin the Class 4A playoffs 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Ardmore 6, Elkmont 1
Tucker Reed threw a no-hitter as Ardmore closed its season Monday with a win over Elkmont.
Reed was dominant on the mound, striking out 12 batters while walking just three. Elkmont’s only run came in the bottom of the first inning via two errors.
Dylan Hall led the Ardmore offense with a home run, while Landon Martin had a double. Reed had two hits to go along with his outstanding pitching performance, while Spike Woods also had two hits for the Tigers.
Jordan Fielding scored the only run for Elkmont.
Lindsay Lane 8, Asbury 7
Lindsay Lane Christian took a victory Monday over Asbury.
Charlie Morrison led the way for LLCA with three hits, including a double, while Drew Turpen also doubled for the Lions. Seth Mitchell had a hit and two RBIs. Max Morrison and Camden Shields each had a hit and drove in a run.
Caleb Johnson pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts to pick up the victory.
Athens 10, Brewer 0
Athens tuned up for the Class 6A playoffs with an easy win Monday over Brewer.
Dawson McNeal and Jacob Jinks combined to shut out the Patriots, with McNeal pitching the first five innings and Jinks tossing one inning to close the game. McNeal had nine strikeouts in his five innings of work.
Isaac Evans led Athens with two hits, including a triple, and five RBIs. Dylan Johnston and Ty Heery had two hits for the Golden Eagles, while Tyde Robinson had a hit and two RBIs. Lars Stanford and Slaton Black had a hit and an RBI each.
Athens will travel to play Hazel Green in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs, with the first game beginning 5 p.m. Friday.
Sumiton Christian 9, Athens Bible 8
Sumiton Christian scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and steal a victory Monday over Athens Bible.
Athens forced extra innings with three runs in the seventh, then took the lead with two runs in the top of the eights before Sumiton came back to take the win in the bottom of the inning.
Gage Johns had a great game for the Trojans, with three hits and five RBIs. Hayden Pierce had three hits, including a double, while Luke Metcalf hit a triple.
Athens Bible will host Hackleburg in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs, with the first game beginning 1 p.m. Friday.
