Man accused of urinating in Tanner church parking lot arrested

A Decatur man was recently arrested in connection to a March incident in which he urinated in the parking lot of Tanner Baptist Church while others were present, records show.

Gery Drall Peoples, 50, of 1903 17th St. SE, Decatur, was arrested Monday on an outstanding warrant after the church filed a complaint with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. Peoples was charged with harassment and public lewdness. He was released on a $500 bond.

Jacob Chandler, associate pastor of administration and youth at the church, said in a statement the suspect had come to the church on “several occasions” approaching members and asking for financial assistance. Chandler said his requests were accommodated the first few times, but he became “highly irritated” when people didn’t give him as much as he wanted. Chandler said the man also acted “in a way some would consider threatening.”

In late-March, Chandler said, the suspect came to the church at a time when only one church member was present, mowing the lawn. The man asked the church member for money, and the church cameras captured the suspect urinating in the church parking lot.

“His erratic and unpredictable behavior patterns along with his repeated return to our campus created concern among the church leadership. He was invited on several occasions to join us for worship and Bible study, but never attended for those purposes and therefore was asked to leave when he expressed no desire to attend worship or Bible study,” Chandler said. “Some in our church made a good faith effort to assist both his financial and spiritual needs. It is regretful that he was not appreciative of those overtures of assistance.”

Peoples is set to be arraigned on the charges on May 20, court records show.
