Calhoun softball takes 2 victories
The Calhoun Community College softball team improved to 9-3 on the season with two victories over Martin Methodist’s junior varsity team Monday.
The Warhawks, playing against the four-year college’s junior squad, won the first game 7-1 before taking the nightcap 2-0.
Makenzie Smith hit a home run in the first game to lead the Calhoun offense. Brandi Bentley hit a triple while Breeann Biddle had a double. De’Asha Gordon and Elkmont’s Dakota McCurley both had two hits in the victory. Anita Bates was the winning pitcher while Kendall Mills recorded the save.
McKenna Rose hit a home run for the Warhawks in the second game to give Calhoun all the runs it would need.
Jessica Shaw also had a double for Calhoun, while McCurley, Mallorie Davis and Taylor Jones each hit singles.

Austin 5, Athens 2
Athens couldn’t stop Austin’s Jackson Landers, either at the plate or on the mound, and that helped lead to a road loss Monday for the Black Bears.
Landers struck out four batters while giving up six hits in six innings of work to pick up the win, while also collecting three hits at the plate.
Easton Williamson had two hits and an RBI for Austin, while Sam Watkins had three hits and an RBI and Zac Kennedy had a hit and an RBI.
Major Reeves led Athens with two hits and an RBI, while Kade McHalffey also had an RBI for the Golden Eagles.
Local soccer teams get state rankings
The first statewide soccer rankings of the season were released this week, and two local teams are among the best.
According to the website Eurosportscoreboard.com, the East Limestone girls team (3-0-1) are ranked No. 8 in Class 4A-5A while the Tanner boys team (4-1-1) is ranked No. 8 in Class 1A-3A.
